The four floors of leadership: build a business that can't be shaken

Find the floor that holds you back, and fix it from the ground up.

The four floors of leadership: a four-storey building in gold line art, the ground floor (yourself) solid gold.

You cannot grow a business while your life falls apart, and you cannot enjoy your life while your business keeps you awake at night. That is why I look at leadership through four domains, built from the bottom up. I call the framework Link to Lead.

1. Personal Internal: how you lead yourself

Your self-awareness, motives, strengths, emotions, energy and habits. When this floor is weak, you can no longer say why you started, your goals are a feeling rather than a number, and you are tired in a way sleep does not fix.

2. Personal External: how you lead others

Empathy, communication, relationships and boundaries. When this floor is weak, you defend yourself when a customer complains, and you know people’s names but not what keeps them awake at night.

3. Business Internal: how you run the work

Your offer, your money, your priorities, your systems and your capacity to execute. When this floor is weak, you justify your price, you cannot say what last month’s profit was, and the business only works when you are personally doing it.

Quick check · 30 seconds

Where are you stuck right now?

  1. Where do your new clients come from today?

  2. When someone asks your price, you…

  3. What would change your next 90 days the most?

4. Business External: how you meet the world

Your customer, their problem, your market, sales, channels and competition. When this floor is weak, you describe your ideal customer in broad terms and most new customers come from one fragile source.

Clarity is a kindness to your customer.

Shadow and light

Every floor has a shadow side, the part of you that reacts, avoids and hides, and a light side, the part that pauses, faces, decides and delivers. The shadow is not your enemy. It is information about where you have been hurt or learned to protect yourself. Once you understand it, you can choose.

Where to start

Problems usually show up on the top floor, as low sales or a quiet pipeline, but they often start lower down. Before you fix the top, find your weakest floor. The Unshakeable audit takes about ten minutes and shows all four side by side.
